In order to get pidgin to work with lync you will need SIPE plugin, therefore install it. With this plugin you should be able to replace your Microsoft Office Communicator client with Pidgin / Adium / Miranda / Telepathy. Is there a plugin for this? Or Is it something to do with the installation? I've installed pidgin but I don't see office communicator in protocol list.
